New York, USA (CWBN)_ As per a Bloomberg report, Microsoft Corp. is intent on changing the status quo of its reliance on Intel Corp. chips and processors, by developing their own designs based on those developed by ARM Ltd, to power its data centres.

Moreover, the Microsoft is also “exploring” the use of different chips in Surface devices as well, unnamed sources have claimed. However, it is deemed likely that the project would lead to the creating of a new line of chips for servers than Surface devices, as it reflects Microsoft’s strong intentions to keep up with its cloud-computing rival, Amazon Inc.

Nonetheless, Intel faced a 6.3 percent drop subsequent to the revelation, reaching an overall 21 percent drop this year.

Microsoft and ARM have declined to comment on the matter, however, a spokesperson for the former noted yesterday (18th Dec) that “Because silicon is a foundational building block for technology, we’re continuing to invest in our own capabilities in areas like design, manufacturing and tools, while also fostering and strengthening partnerships with a wide range of chip providers.
