Indian Railways has taken many significant steps over the last few years, to modernize trains, stations, and much more. But yet, there’s one thing that continues to plague people traveling on the trains which has smelly and dirty toilets. According to a report, to solve the problem Indian Railways plans to turn to technology. Many complaints have continuously been coming up from passengers who are regularly traveling by train.

According to a statement, the Railways Board has floated the idea of testing IoT-based technology. The technology will be used to smell foul odor through detectors. The report also states that Mumbai-based startup Viliso Technologies has been selected for the project. For now, It is a test project, which will be implemented in certain coaches.

There are smart systems that use sensors to recognize foul smells that reek up the toilets. The sensors can pick up volatile compounds and molecules in the air. The facts are then transmitted to a central hub. The hub examines the information and can cause automated replies. For instance, it might alert sanitation crews about foul smells and inform them that cleaning is necessary. This real-time monitoring allows for quicker intervention and improved odor control.

According to Viliso Technologies’ website, the startup has a few IoT-based products that help for better sanitation. For instance, there’s Gandhvedh, which is an IoT-based electronic device that monitors Humidity, Temperature, Odor, and Total Volatile Organic Compound (TVOC). The device is fitted in the toilet where odor monitoring is required, notes the product description on the official website. The device then sends the odor data to a mobile app & web app which are used by the caretaker or monitoring authority responsible for sanitation of the toilet, says the company about the product. But it is yet notclear if this is the product, which Indian Railways plans to use in trains and stations’ toilets.
