Neutrino emitter gives new view of galaxy

Australia (Commonwealth Union) – Neutrinos are subatomic particles which were not believed to be detectable a few years back. A global group of scientists, that include researchers at the University of Adelaide, have collected new evidence about the energetic core of an active galaxy millions of lights years away by finding its neutrino particles emissions.

The researchers discovered NGC 1068, also referred to as Messier 77, in the constellation of Cetus, which is a high-energy neutrino emitter. They have noticed the particles with the aid of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica located in the south pole.

Associate Professor Gary Hill from the University of Adelaide, Department of Physics, School of Physical Sciences, who is a member of the international IceCube Collaboration stated that they were looking inside active regions of the NGC 1068 galaxy 47 million light years away. “As we observe neutrinos emitted by it we will be able to learn more about the extreme particle acceleration and production processes occurring inside the galaxy, which hasn’t been possible up to now as other high energy emissions can’t escape from it,” he said.

Neutrinos generally pass, by the trillion, via our bodies and all locations of the Earth per second, seldom interacting with matter, which brings about difficulty in their detection.

The findings were noted by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, concluded in late 2010. NGC 1068 is visible with large binoculars and has been an area of interest for a lot of astronomical observations. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory discovered the first ever source of neutrinos in 2018 emitted by TXS 0506+056, a very distant blazar from which an extremely large black hole-powered particle jets, pointing straight at Earth, emit neutrinos. This brought about collaborated observations in a brief period of neutrinos and gamma-rays.
