New childcare relief in the UK

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – The British government has announced the commencement of the most extensive childcare expansion to date, which marks a significant milestone as thousands of parents of two-year-olds nationwide receive assistance with their childcare expenses.

In this initial phase, working parents of toddlers aged two can now avail themselves of 15 hours per week of government-funded childcare starting from April 1st.

This support initiative forms a crucial part of the government’s strategy to aid families, liberating numerous couples from the dilemma of balancing family responsibilities with their careers. Over 150,000 children are expected to benefit from government-funded places as of this week.

By September 2025, the complete rollout will be finalized, enabling working parents to access 30 hours of childcare from the conclusion of maternity leave until their child begins school. This measure is anticipated to save parents an average of £6900 annually.

To facilitate this expansion, the government has bolstered the childcare sector by increasing staffing levels and available spots, implementing measures to enhance the recruitment and retention of childminders, launching a comprehensive national recruitment campaign, and injecting over £400 million of additional investment to elevate funding rates in the fiscal year 2024-25. Moreover, the Chancellor affirmed at the Spring Budget that funding rates will further increase by an estimated £500 million over the next two years.

Confident in the readiness of the childcare sector to meet the demand, the government stated that it is ensuring that parents have access to the necessary childcare. Notably, the government is providing a higher reimbursement rate per place than the market rate, as independently verified by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

PM Rishi Sunak says “Last year we promised the biggest ever expansion in childcare provision this country has ever seen, and today we are delivering on our plan with 15 hours of free childcare for parents with 2-year-olds”.
