New Delhi: Indian Railways has recently issued a new power car maintenance policy to improve the reliability and availability of power cars for train operation. A power car is a special coach attached to all trains to supply electricity for running air conditioning, fans, and lighting systems in passenger coaches.
According to the policy which was issued by the Railway Board, a new OEM (original equipment manufacturer)-based maintenance contract will be signed in which OEMs or their authorized dealers will do the scheduled maintenance and repairs. A person aware of the development said that It will also help improve the reliability and availability of power cars for train operations.
However, the new maintenance policy has shifted to kit-based maintenance. Railways have turned to Rate Contracts with OEMs, to ensure quick availability of materials. The person quoted above said that the rate contract for these kits is under finalization, which will significantly lessen the lead time for procurement, which is needed for these power cars.
The new policy aims to provide continuous power to the train ensuring that air conditioning, heating, and lighting systems function smoothly, enhancing passenger comfort. The changes would also improve the safety of train operations as a dependable power supply and would maintain safety systems, as well as communication devices and emergency lighting.
Overall, uninterrupted electricity improves the travel experience by providing comfort, safety, and convenience. The new policy is in line with a series of initiatives that Railways had planned to improve the reliability of its train operations, ensuring both improved safety and enhanced comfort to travelers. Apart from improving the reliability of power cars, the Railways is also investing in improving its tracks and signaling systems.
