Jet fuel consumption has dropped all over the world as each country has been forced to stop international tourism operation because of Corona Virus spreading rampantly across the globe, but it seems that New Zealand’s consumption of jet fuel has dropped to an all-time low in 27 years as international flights leaving New Zealand have more or less come to halt.

Total jet fuel demand was the lowest average daily level since the 15,300 b/d in 1993, according to the latest energy quarterly data from the New Zealand Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE). New Zealand reported record jet fuel consumption of 33,700 b/d in 2018 when international flights accounted for 78pc of total use.

It was the government of New Zealand which took the stand to impose some of the strictest restrictions on air travel in and out of the country. There was even strict restriction imposed on domestic travel although that was eased later on as the countries Covid infection rated dropped to the lowest in the world.

Jet fuel consumption for international flights departing New Zealand was at a 26-year low in 2020, with it at the lowest daily average since the 8,800 b/d in 1994. Refined jet fuel output from New Zealand’s sole 135,000 b/d Marsden Point refinery was the lowest since 1987 when it produced an average of 10,700 b/d. Data from Air New Zealand also showed the number of passengers carried by the airline on international flights was often more than 95pc below pre-Covid-19 levels.

This  is a slump that the entire world is facing because of the virus it seems that New Zealand may not have expected it to slump this low. New Zealand was one of the first countries to get out of the Covid situation without any major populations disruptions and has one of the first airlines in the world to do international flights.
