400,000 US dollars would be provided to Nigeria to develop an active pharmaceutical ingredient facility, which is a key initiative towards making the west African country to become self-sufficient in pharmaceutical ingredient manufacture. According to a statement from Afreximbank, the fund provided to the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) covers a sizable amount of the anticipated expenditures necessary to execute the project.

This historic collaboration between NIPRD and Afreximbank paves the way for the creation of joint initiatives targeted at offering contextual answers to the continent’s emerging concerns. This partnership represents a paradigm shift toward a new way to ensure long-term access to healthcare in Africa while also boosting socioeconomic growth. According to the statement, African pharmaceutical production businesses depend largely on the import of active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients, which are required to develop completed pharmaceutical products.

According to the statement, the Afreximbank fund support would help the NIPRD to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients domestically in Nigeria, which is a major step toward Nigeria’s pharmaceutical freedom and self-sufficiency. The statement noted, “In addition, the project includes the development of a contextual training program for pharmaceutical industry stakeholders, to ensure that key skills are acquired by industry players who represent the vanguard of essential medicine production on the continent”.

According to the bank, financial assistance for the active pharmaceutical ingredient unit project would help ensure the secure distribution of medication throughout Africa, as well as boost the industrialization of the pharmaceutical industry, resulting in employment and income generation. Afreximbank is a Pan-African multilateral financial organization charged with the responsibility of funding and supporting intra- and extra-African commerce. Afreximbank has donated over US$6.5 billion in 2020 to assist member nations in mitigating the negative effects of financial, economic, and health impacts induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
