Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Nigerian leaders expressed profound sorrow over the tragic demise of Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of one of Nigeria’s largest banks, who, along with five others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Southern California’s Mojave Desert on Friday.

Wigwe, the chief executive of Access Bank, was accompanied by his wife, son, and notable figures like Bamofin Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former chair of NGX Group, aboard the aircraft when it crashed near Interstate 15 shortly after 10 p.m.

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, extended his condolences in a post on social media platform X, mourning the “overwhelming tragedy” and praying for the departed souls’ peaceful repose. Tinubu also expressed solidarity with the grieving families and the multitude of Nigerians mourning the loss.

The untimely passing of Wigwe, a revered figure in the banking sector, has deeply shocked the nation. Renowned for his leadership and vision, Wigwe played a pivotal role in transforming Access Bank into a global powerhouse, significantly expanding its assets and footprint across Africa.

Access Holdings’ Group Company Secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, hailed Wigwe as a driving force behind the bank’s transformation, attributing his passion and commitment to excellence as instrumental in shaping the institution’s legacy.

The tragic incident marks a significant loss for Nigeria’s banking industry, with Wigwe’s ambitious vision and relentless pursuit of excellence leaving an indelible mark on the sector.

Beyond his contributions to banking, Wigwe was deeply invested in the education sector, with plans to establish a private university in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, showcasing his commitment to societal development.

The crash occurred south of I-15 near Halloran Springs Road, northeast of Barstow, with witnesses reporting inclement weather conditions at the time of the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the crash, with preliminary findings expected within 30 days.

The tragic event comes on the heels of another helicopter crash in San Diego, underscoring the somber mood gripping the nation as it mourns the loss of cherished individuals.
