India (Commonwealth Union)_ As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches, Visakhapatnam, notably its industrial center, Gajuwaka, is all set to welcome the festival with an exclusive record-breaking theme this year. The unique theme is a tribute to Lord Ganesha and India’s textile legacy. Accordingly, this year’s celebration adopts an eco-friendly theme with an astonishing idol titled Sri Sundara Vastra Maha Ganesha that is made completely of one lakh sarees collected from across the country. This unique idol, which is a reminder of both devotion and sustainability, is completely different from traditional idols. It celebrates India’s textile legacy by converting vivid cotton and silk sarees into awe-inspiring spiritual creations.

Designed by SV Entertainments, the idol sits atop a bamboo framework and reflects a deep cultural message about mindful celebration and environmental responsibility. The Namuna, or model of the idol, was officially revealed by Andhra Pradesh TDP President and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao. During the unveiling, Rao praised the creative effort and called for smooth logistical arrangements to manage the expected crowds of devotees. “This is a proud moment, not just for Gajuwaka, but for the entire state. It’s the first time in India that an idol of this kind is being created using sarees alone,” said Kosireddi Ganesh of SV Entertainments.

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India and throughout the world. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God who is known for removing obstacles. He is also referred to as the God of wisdom and prosperity. Accordingly, this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi festival falls on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with the Madhyahna Ganesha Puja between 11:06 AM and 1:40 PM. The festivities will continue for 21 days, eventually ending in Ganesh Visarjan on Saturday, September 6. While the festival is widely celebrated across Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, Gajuwaka is well-known for its massive and usually record-breaking Ganesha statues every year.

SV Entertainments, known for pushing the envelope each year, previously created the tallest standing idol in the state, measuring an incredible 117 feet. This year’s creation is expected to reach over 90 feet in height and features Lord Ganesha in a seated posture. Two other divine figures will accompany the main idol, Sri Lakshmi Narayana on one side and Lord Sri Krishna on the other, the latter designed to appear standing in water. Srikanth, a master sculptor from Chirala, leads the creative endeavour, which is supported by a team of 25 talented artisans. According to Srikanth, around 40% of the work has been finished, with the crew aiming for a final completion date of August 25.
Each saree used in the creation was carefully selected and fashioned to make different portions of the idol. These clothes are from major textile hubs such as Mumbai, Surat, and Chennai, symbolizing unity through diversity. “We chose sarees to highlight their cultural and emotional value to every Indian household while also promoting a greener approach to celebration,” said Kosireddi Ganesh, the organizer. Additionally, as a traditional mark, a ‘Maha Laddu’ from Tapeswaram, a popular Ganesh Chaturthi offering, will be offered to the Lord Ganesha idol. Furthermore, following the festivities on the final day, the organizers will gift the sarees used in the idol to devotees, highlighting the concept of charity and sustainability.
The festival showcasing the historic Ganesh idol hopes to draw thousands of people from Visakhapatnam, as well as from surrounding districts and states. This exclusive combination of spirituality, artistry, and environmental consciousness creates a new standard for how festivals should be celebrated. With only a few weeks left for the big day, Gajuwaka is gearing up with high spirits. Furthermore, the Sri Sundara Vastra Maha Ganesha is a treat for the eyes and an emotional reminder of our culture, creativity, and the strength of group devotion.
