One of the costliest natural disasters in Canada’s history

MERRITT, B.C. (CU)_Thousands of people across Canada’s westernmost province remain stranded by flood waters, as mudslides destroyed houses, roads, bridges and other key infrastructure. Premier John Horgan has declared a state of emergency in British Columbia, granting local authorities extraordinary powers to deal with what has been described as one the costliest natural disasters in Canada’s history. Receding floodwaters were said to be helping rescue efforts on Thursday (18 Nov), but the continuous downpour have blocked off towns and cut access to the Port of Vancouver, the largest port in the country.
