Open Letter from Iranian Opposition Figure Calls on President of the United States to End Iran Conflict

Dated 19th March 2026, a letter calls to limit the conflict that has been ongoing in Iran. The author of this letter, Dr. M. Khonsari, has directly addressed it to the President of the United States, urging him to reconsider the continuation of military action. Being a highly wealthy individual who is based in London, he is also an Iranian opposition figure as well as a former diplomat who has served his time as a foreign policy advisor to Iran’s last pre-revolution prime minister, Shapour Bakhtiar. He is quite evidently known as an advocate for peaceful transition toward democratic governance within Iran.

19 March 2026

Dear Mr. President,

Whatever the course of prior statements and actions, it is now clear that the central objectives underlying the initiation of hostilities against the Islamic regime have, in substantial measure, been realized. In light of this, any continuation or expansion of military action—particularly where it extends beyond clearly defined regime targets—would be difficult to justify, both strategically and morally.

The Iranian people have already borne immense hardship under the present regime. To subject them to further suffering through damage to civilian infrastructure and essential national assets—those upon which livelihoods, recovery, and future stability depend—risks undermining the very principles such actions are said to uphold.

The ultimate fate of the current regime, now critically weakened, is a matter that must—and will—be determined by the people of Iran themselves. What they do not need is intervention purportedly undertaken on their behalf, yet one that risks proving effective in theory but devastating in practice.

Mr. President,

At this consequential juncture, marking both the close of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of Nowrooz, I respectfully urge you to consider bringing this conflict to an end. Such a decision, that can only be made by you, would not only reflect strength and restraint, but would also offer millions of innocent people in Iran and across the Persian Gulf region the opportunity to regain a measure of the peace and solace they so deeply deserve.

Respectfully,

Dr. M. Khonsari

As Ramadan and the Persian New Year, Nowrooz, which typically falls on the 20th and 21st of March, come closer, Dr. Khonsari’s appeal significantly shows how the war is evidently impacting not only the Iranians but the rest of the world as well. Along with many other appeals made by prominent figures, Dr. Khonsari’s call for peace has gained momentum, highlighting that the need for diplomatic solutions and restraint to prevent further suffering is not only urgent but also presents an opportunity to create stability and reconciliation both within Iran and globally.
