Oppenheimer, the latest creation by Christopher Nolan, brought forth two poignant moments featuring Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh’s characters. These scenes stirred significant attention before the movie’s release, marking Nolan’s first venture into such intimate content. However, the Indian audience experienced some alterations when the film premiered on July 21.

In the initial scene, keen eyes caught the abrupt ending, attributed to the blurring of Florence Pugh’s bare back. Yet, it was in the subsequent scene where the most significant alteration took place. Sharp-eyed fans noticed Florence portrayed nude but cleverly veiled by a “black dress.” The reason behind this change remains speculative, with no official confirmation or statement from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Oppenheimer faced criticism in India for its inclusion of a sex scene intertwined with the Bhagavad Gita. Uday Mahurkar, representing the Save Culture Save India Foundation, expressed discontent, citing religious sentiments that were offended. The Foundation called on the I&B ministry to take action, contending that certain scenes attacked Hinduism, specifically highlighting a moment where a woman has a man recite the Bhagwad Geeta during sexual intercourse. The Foundation’s statement urged the ministry to uphold the dignity of the revered holy book of the Hindus and to ensure measures are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Released on July 21, Oppenheimer draws inspiration from the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Christopher Nolan takes the helm as director, writer, and producer, assembling a star-studded cast, including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh, with Cillian Murphy captivating audiences in the titular role.

Apart from the intimate scenes, the film has faced criticism in India for a sex scene interwoven with the Bhagavad Gita, a revered holy book of Hinduism. The Save Culture Save India Foundation expressed offense at the scene, urging the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) to take action to uphold the dignity of the sacred text and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

As “Oppenheimer” unfolds its captivating narrative, audiences are drawn into the world of J. Robert Oppenheimer, witnessing the triumphs and tragedies of this remarkable figure in history.
