New Zealanders Take to the Hills as Powerful Quakes Trigger Tsunami

There was tsunami wave that was caused by a series of powerful earthquakes in the North Island in New Zealand on Friday. There were thousands of families that evacuated their homes and moved to higher grounds and have now been given the green light by the government to move back to their residencies.

There was a warning as the officials were worried since the strongest of earthquakes had been on the magnitude of 8.1, but the large wave had passed and the agency has relaxed the tension so that people can go back to living their normal lives.

There was footage of water surging into a marina in Northland and to a north island in the East Cape area, it was before this that the people were quickly evacuated to avoid any kind of casualties.

‘We are safe’

There was an emergency alert in Auckland, a city of 1.7 million people where they were warned to stay away from the coastal area as there were was tsunami warning. This was because there were a series of earthquakes that hit the island and the strongest one being the third one at 8.1 magnitude which could have caused a tsunami wave.

Linda Tatare, a resident of Anaura Bay stated that “Everyone, and their dogs, are up in the hills, we are safe. We can all see our properties from here.” It was not just the Pacific Island that had the warnings the warnings included New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
