Pacific Queens Gather in Fiji to Champion Culture and Regional Issues

The annual Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026 was hosted in Nadi, Fiji, this year. A beautiful gathering consisting of multiple beauty queens from all across the Pacific regions has come together in Fiji, and it was clearly not just for crowns and sashes but to highlight the most pressing issues regarding society as well as culture which the region is facing. This is the first time in nearly a decade that Nadi is hosting this event. It blends culture and leadership as well as advocacy.

Taking part in this event are seven pageant members from seven different nations. In this group, there are representatives from American Sāmoa, and the rest of the six are part of the Commonwealth (the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Sāmoa, and Tonga). These nations are preparing for a week filled with many events, including research, presentations, cultural exchanges, and public conversations, which will be the highest point in the crowning of Miss Pacific Islands 2026.

While traditionally seen as a celebration of beauty and poise, the organisers have steered the event toward tangible community impact. Each contestant’s research topic reflects real-world priorities, including environmental protection, education, youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and the fight against crime and bullying, which are central themes of the event. This change highlights a much larger vision of pageantry as a space for discussion on issues that resonate deeply across the Pacific.

Ana Tuiketei, the director for this pageant, highlighted the event’s evolution during opening activities. She said it is now a platform for friendship as well as shared understanding among Pacific women, offering them a stage to come up with their insights and represent their communities. Beyond competition, she noted, the week is about building networks, celebrating cultural identity, and amplifying voices.

The activities included visits to local villages, which allowed the contestants to learn about traditional customs and values as well as daily life, which helped build stronger connections and mutual respect among them.

However, the Solomon Islands has decided to sit this event out due to the unresolved issues that took place in last year’s contest regarding fairness and transparency. Despite this absence, the pageant continues to draw attention as an important forum for Pacific women.

The organisers hope that by mixing cultural celebration with social advocacy, the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant will help show a new image of how pageantry is understood all across the Pacific, not just as an event showcasing beauty but also as a symbol of leadership, cultural pride, and even collective purpose.
