LONDON (CU)_British Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week was a part of intense diplomacy with NATO and G7 allies in Brussels, where some of the biggest economies in the world met to discuss their approach on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and pledged there would be a “very severe response” to any chemical attack launched by Moscow. Following their discussions the British leader expressed his confidence in Kyiv’s victory.
While the situation in Ukraine remains “grim, [and] miserable”, PM Johnson praised the courage and bravery of “Churchillian” leader Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of the war-torn nation, adding that “I think Ukraine can certainly win.” “There’s a sense in which Putin has already failed or lost because I think that he had literally no idea that the Ukrainians were going to mount the resistance that they are and he totally misunderstood what Ukraine is,” the Prime Minister said in an interview with the BBC’s Newsnight programme the day after his meeting with Western allies in Brussels, adding that instead of extinguishing Ukraine as a nation, the Russian leader is solidifying it.
However, the British leader conceded that there are several challenges attached to providing President Zelensky the tanks he demanded to counter Russia’s aggression. It is logistically “very difficult” to supply the tanks and jets requested for by him during the NATO summit on Wednesday. Noting that western allies would strive to provide the Ukrainian leader with the weapons “in the quantity and of the quality” he needs to fight against the Russian invaders, PM Johnson pledged more missiles and a new deployment of UK troops in Eastern Europe. The Prime Minister acknowledged Kyiv wanted more from NATO as he said the member-states felt “agony” about their “inability to do more given the constraints we face”.
