Progressive education, and what is it all about

-

Parents will come across the term “progressive education” when they do research on K-12 schools for their children. There are different ways where schools define this approach.

Progressive schools aim to engage students “as active participants in their learning and in society. Even though its private or public these schools mostly offer a project-based curriculum with an emphasis on individuals.” Agency in their learning, was mentioned by the nonprofit progressive education.

The early 20th century education, Progressive education was rooted in ideas, where John Dewey approached children and placed them in the center of their own learning, and wanted education to be active and hand on, instead of memorizing and sitting quietly. He wanted children to think and experiment new ideas.  Presently Dewey’s vision continues to influence schools across the country also is known as the “father of progressive education”.

For progressive schools PEN’s website list educational principals which includes for active students to participate in learning, building and recognizing students. “Innate desire to learn” and a collaborative approach between educators, students and the community. These schools believe that education should prepare children to engage to become citizens in a wider world.

Than a traditional classroom, a progressive classroom is different where the students take so much responsibility for their learning. Instead of listening to a teacher’s lecture in a room, the students can solve their problem together which will create a louder environment.

The dean of children’s program and head of the Bank Street School for children in New York, Doug Knecht said that there is an underline routine and plan when progressive education is doing well and there is a ton of structures.

Researchers say that students learning become more deeper, when they personally invest on it. Knecht says, when students have an opportunity to pursue, on what they are interested on, Studies have shown that they have heightened brain activity.

Since the modules are focused to develop each individual students, experts say progressing schools can work well for each and every student. Students who need a lot of instruction and have trouble working independently may struggle with this model.

Cucchiara says, but it’s a good fit for children who may struggle sitting in a traditional classroom and who appreciate the hands-on approach.

According to Thornton, at home parents and caregivers asked to engage and to reinforce learning concepts. The feeling of raising citizens for a democratic society has to be achieved.
