Prominent Indian-American legal scholar passes away at 90

USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Indian-American legal scholar Ved Prakash Nanda, a distinguished academic and revered member of the Indian diaspora in the United States, passed away at 90. Accordingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, acknowledging Nanda’s significant contributions to the legal field and emphasizing his unwavering commitment to legal education.

In a message shared on social media, PM Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda, recognizing his invaluable work and highlighting his passion for fostering strong India-USA relations. The Prime Minister extended heartfelt condolences to Nanda’s family and friends. PM Modi penned, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda Ji, a distinguished academic whose contributions to the legal field are invaluable. His work highlights his strong commitment to legal education. He was also a prominent member of the Indian diaspora in the USA and was passionate about strong India-USA relations. Ved Prakash Nanda, honored with the Padma Bhushan award in 2018 for his noteworthy contributions to literature and education, held the position of professor of International Law at the University of Denver, Colorado. Within the university, he played key roles, serving as the Founding Director and later as Director Emeritus of the International Legal Studies Program. In 2006, Nanda received a generous donation of $1 million from DU alumni Doug and Mary Scrivner. This contribution facilitated the establishment of the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law, which commenced its operations in 2007. The Center actively hosted programs for legal professionals, students, and community participants while promoting scholarly pursuits in the realm of international law.

Hailing from Gujranwala in Punjab, Ved Prakash Nanda held esteemed positions such as president of the World Jurist Association and vice president of the American Society of International Law. Additionally, he contributed as a member of the advisory council of the United States Institute of Human Rights. Nanda’s diverse roles included serving as chairman of the board of the Hindu University of America. As a prolific author, he penned or co-authored 24 books covering various aspects of international law. His accolades also encompassed the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Community Builder’s Award, adding to the rich tapestry of his distinguished career and impact in the fields of law and education.
