Qatar-Australia Flight…

-

It’s been quite a journey for Qatar Airways in Australia! Reports from Travel Weekly and the Australian Financial Review suggest that the ongoing tiff over flight permissions is taking a toll on both sides. Currently, Qatar Airways is limited to 28 weekly roundtrip flights to major Aussie airports like Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, while enjoying unrestricted access to smaller markets like Adelaide.

Australia’s Transport Minister, Catherin King, has cited “national interests” for rejecting Qatar’s bid to increase flights by a substantial 75%. Minister King emphasizes the need for stable, well-paying jobs for Australians in the aviation sector when making these calls. The move also stems from public sentiments, partly influenced by a lawsuit involving Australian women and Qatar Airways. In 2020, these women were involved in a distressing incident at Hamad International Airport, affecting public opinion.

However, there’s more to this than meets the eye. Recent figures disclosed by the Australian Financial Review reveal a noteworthy economic impact – a whopping $540 million to $788 million annually – due to the veto on extra Qatar Airways flights. This might not seem like much on a national scale, but incremental development can play a significant role in boosting productivity and quality of life.

The situation has taken an intriguing twist, with Qatar Airways adopting a workaround. Last autumn, they transformed their Doha–Melbourne route into Doha–Melbourne–Adelaide, utilizing a loophole that doesn’t apply to Adelaide under the “major airport” rules. This change, albeit innovative, involves what they call “ghost flights” – flights with very few passengers – between Melbourne and Adelaide.

It seems like both sides are engaged in a friendly briefing war, with Australian “industry insiders” expressing their concerns about Qatar Airways taking matters into their own hands. While there might be some turbulence in the relationship, the friendly skies of diplomacy continue to evolve. We’ll see how the situation progresses and whether the winds of change sweep in a resolution that benefits all involved.
