Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Renowned Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has formally declared his candidacy for the Chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC), marking a potentially groundbreaking bid for leadership. During a press briefing on Thursday, Odinga announced his intention to vie for the influential role, emphasizing his thorough consultations with allies prior to making the decision.

“I am prepared to offer my services to the continent if Africa’s leadership desires it. I am ready to pursue the chairmanship of the African Union,” stated Odinga.

Expressing concern over the phenomenon of “brain drain,” Odinga lamented the challenges faced by African youth compelled to seek opportunities abroad due to difficult economic circumstances. He committed to leveraging his leadership to reshape Africa’s prospects and position the continent as a formidable economic force.

“As a Pan-Africanist, I firmly believe that Africa deserves better and should aspire for more,” asserted Odinga. “We must reverse this trend and harness all our resources to accelerate socio-economic growth across our continent.”

Highlighting his tenure as the AU special envoy for infrastructure development in Africa from 2018 to 2023, Odinga underscored his qualifications for the position, citing his deep understanding of the socio-economic landscape across Africa.

“This role provided me with invaluable insights into every African nation. I am confident that through collaboration with these countries, we can uplift Africa,” Odinga remarked.

Odinga disclosed his engagement with former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, who was present at the briefing, to mobilize leaders across the continent and garner support for his candidacy. Endorsing Odinga’s bid, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of having an East African leader assume the AUC chairperson role, signaling a potential shift in regional representation within the AU leadership.

The impending vacancy in the AUC chairperson position next year, as Chad’s Moussa Faki concludes his two-term tenure, sets the stage for Odinga’s candidacy. The chairperson serves as the AU’s chief executive officer and legal representative, overseeing administrative and financial matters, promoting the AU’s objectives, and engaging with stakeholders.

As Odinga embarks on his candidacy for one of Africa’s most prestigious leadership positions, his bid carries implications not only for Kenya but also for the broader trajectory of continental governance and development.
