Ravi Shastri and Shubman Gill slated to be honored at the BCCI Awards

-

India (Commonwealth) _ Ravi Shastri, former India all-rounder and head coach, will receive the BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Shubman Gill will be honored with the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ title after a spectacular year in which he became the fastest to reach 2000 runs in ODIs and hit five hundreds. Shubman Gill will earn the Cricketer of the Year award. Gill excelled in the ODI format, amassing 1,584 runs from 29 innings at an average of 63.36, with five hundreds and nine half-centuries.

His greatest achievement was his double century against New Zealand. He ended up being the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in ODIs. He was also the fastest to reach 2,000 runs in ODIs, beating former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla’s record, which had lasted for more than 12 years.

He (Shastri) has been picked for the award, while Gill will be named cricketer of the year, according to a BCCI official. The BCCI awards will be hosted for the first time since 2019, with both the India and England teams scheduled to attend ahead of the first Test, which begins on Thursday in Hyderabad.

Shastri, 61, played for India in 80 Tests and 150 One-Day Internationals. Following his retirement, he rose to prominence in the broadcasting industry. He also coached the national team twice, initially as a team director from 2014 to 2016 and then as the head coach with captain Virat Kohli till the T20 World Cup in 2021.

Back-to-back Test series victories in Australia were the pinnacle of his career. However, India was unable to win an ICC championship under Shastri and Kohli’s leadership. When Shastri was around, India made it to the WTC final, but lost to New Zealand. In 2019, India advanced to the ODI World Cup semifinals.

Shastri stated during his goodbye celebration in the UAE in 2021 that he couldn’t be more proud of the squad. The caliber of cricket played by this side over the previous five years in all formats is evident to everybody. When you perform in that manner, when you travel the world and beat teams in all formats, you know you’re a member of one great cricket squad, he added.

I’m not talking about a fantastic cricket team, India, but one of the greatest cricket teams in history, because those kinds of performances don’t happen very frequently.
