Mauritius (Commonwealth Union)_ President Droupadi Murmu of India announced a historic decision granting Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to the 7th generation of individuals of Indian origin in Mauritius, marking a pivotal moment in fostering a renewed connection with the ancestral homeland. This groundbreaking provision extends the opportunity for younger Mauritians of Indian descent to become overseas citizens of India.

The announcement took place during the National Day celebrations of Mauritius in its capital, Port Louis, where President Murmu underscored India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius with a range of developmental initiatives. These include significant projects such as the metro project, the new EMT hospital, the Supreme Court building, a solar power plant, and other collaborative endeavors aimed at mutual progress.
President Murmu emphasized the long-term ties between India and Mauritius, highlighting joint efforts in securing the Indian Ocean, sharing COVID vaccines during the pandemic, bolstering capacities across sectors, enhancing economic and people-to-people ties, and extending mutual support on global platforms. Expressing gratitude for India’s assistance in developmental projects that benefit the people of Mauritius, President Murmu referenced recent initiatives launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visits to Mauritius. These initiatives include the launch of UPI and RuPay card settlement systems, the inauguration of a new airstrip and jetty, and the announcement of a program supplying cost-effective high genetic medicines to Mauritius.
During her three-day stay at the island nation, President Droupadi Murmu engaged in discussions with Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jagnauth aiming to further deepen the bilateral relations between the two nations. As a symbolic gesture, President Murmu awarded a RuPay card to Prime Minister Jugnauth, to mark the inauguration of RuPay card services in Mauritius in February this year. President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Mauritius began with warm greetings from Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth at the airport, where she was received with full honors, symbolizing the beginning of a significant diplomatic relations.
