Researchers produce perovskite solar cell with increased efficiency

The team of Professor Sargent is among those producing new techniques to unlock the possibilities of perovskite solar cells. The prior work they had done has included 2 layered tandem cells, however their most recent work, that appears in Nature, draws its attention to a 3-layer design.

Researchers applied a type of perovskite material referred to as ABX3, which is produced with the use of a mix of various substances, that consist of cesium, lead, tin, iodine, bromine along with certain small organic molecules. The top layer, in particular, has a make-up that is mixed halide perovskites, which having a large proportion of bromine together with iodine.

Hao Chen, a post-doctoral researcher who is also co-lead author for the study indicated that the occurrences in light-induced phase separation of the mixed perovskites show that the bombardment of high-frequency photons results in the phases that are higher in bromine getting divided from those that are high in iodine.

He further pointed out that this will bring about an elevation of defects and a reduction in overall performance.

To resolve this issue, researchers applied detailed computer models for the simulation of the impact of the changing compositions for the crystals.
