Singapore (Commonwealth Union)_ Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has secured a decisive landslide victory in the country’s 2025 General Election, winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats. This election marked Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s first major political test since assuming leadership of the party and the country. With 65.57% of the popular vote, the PAP strengthened its grip on power amid a backdrop of global economic uncertainty and domestic calls for political reform. Lawrence Wong, 52, a US-trained economist and the current Finance Minister, took over from long-serving Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in May of last year.

Wong’s leadership was tested against an energized opposition and rising concerns among Singaporeans about the cost of living, income inequality, and social inclusivity. However, the electorate largely opted for continuity and stability, endorsing the PAP’s economic stewardship and long-term vision for Singapore. “This strong mandate reflects the trust Singaporeans have placed in our party,” Wong said at a press conference held in the early hours of Sunday morning. “These results place Singapore in a stronger position to confront a turbulent world.” He acknowledged the desire for more diverse voices in Parliament but emphasized the importance of a united leadership team to navigate the complex challenges ahead.

The Workers’ Party (WP), the main opposition force, maintained its presence in Parliament with 10 seats, similar to its result in the 2020 election. Though unable to make further electoral gains, WP’s continued foothold reflects a segment of the electorate’s desire for checks and balances in governance. Other opposition parties failed to make significant inroads. This 14th general election since Singapore’s independence in 1965 saw key issues dominating the campaign, including economic development, job security, inflation, healthcare, education, and the role of minority communities in governance. Wong, in particular, focused on securing public confidence to guide Singapore through external economic headwinds, such as trade tensions linked to recent US tariffs. The government had earlier downgraded its economic growth forecast and warned of a potential recession.

The PAP’s resounding win in this election, where voting is compulsory for citizens over the age of 21, reinforces its status as one of the world’s longest-governing political parties. Since its rise to power in 1959, the PAP has maintained unbroken control of the Singaporean government. It is currently the second-longest ruling party globally, after Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party. While the PAP is often credited with transforming Singapore into one of Asia’s leading economies, it also faces criticisms, particularly from younger voters. Rising living costs, restricted civil liberties, and concerns over housing affordability have led to a growing appetite for alternative voices, especially among the urban middle class.
Addressing these sentiments, PM Wong pledged to make governance more inclusive. In a significant gesture, he emphasized the Indian community’s role in Singapore’s multicultural society and ensured that candidates of Indian origin were fielded in this election. “The story of the Indian community is part of Singapore’s story,” he remarked during his campaign. International attention was also drawn to the election. Leaders across the region closely monitored the outcome, given Singapore’s strategic role in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Wong, expressing confidence in the strengthening of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
PM Wong closed his post-election remarks by expressing humility and gratitude: “This result inspires us to serve you better and work harder to improve your lives. The road ahead is not easy, but together, we will continue to build a stronger, more resilient Singapore.” The 2025 general election reinforces Singapore’s image as a politically stable, business-centric nation while highlighting the delicate balance the PAP must maintain as it addresses evolving socio-economic expectations. With a firm mandate, Lawrence Wong’s leadership era begins amid both hope and scrutiny.
