The rankings are based on an examination of research papers and citations, in addition to a poll of academic repute that received around 40,000 responses. Apart from this, extra information on the university’s teaching, faculty, and students, as well as its industrial income, was also considered. Other top universities are Tsinghua University in China which is ranked sixteenth, while the University of Hong Kong is ranked thirty-first.

According to Mr. Phil Baty, the chief knowledge officer for Times Higher Education, the progress of NUS and NTU in the rankings demonstrated Singapore’s remarkable improvement. The Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings are two of the most prominent university ranking lists worldwide. Mr Baty said: “The data shows that Singapore is a growing world powerhouse for excellence in higher education – a powerful and well-connected international hub that continues to improve”.
