Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Ubuntu Pathway is a non-profit organization located in Gqeberha, South Africa, that aims to break the cycle of poverty in disadvantaged communities. Despite being situated in a township, the organization provides a bright and clean learning environment for children from poor backgrounds. The school, funded by philanthropists and local companies, does not charge fees and serves children within a seven-kilometer radius.
Many of the children who attend Ubuntu Pathway come from families affected by HIV/AIDS. The organization includes a clinic staffed by medical professionals who specialize in treating pregnant women with HIV. Through their efforts, nearly 600 women receive free treatment, resulting in all babies delivered at the center being born HIV-free.
The approach of Ubuntu Pathway follows a cradle-to-career model, focusing on providing comprehensive support and education from birth to adulthood. They prioritize helping HIV-positive mothers, ensuring they receive the necessary medical care, and then supporting the children through their primary and high school education. The founder of Ubuntu Pathway, Jacob Lief, was inspired to establish the organization after witnessing the historic transition to democracy in South Africa. His experience meeting an elderly woman who had waited in line for 30 hours to cast her vote made him question the meaning of freedom and democracy. Lief, along with his friend Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula, established Ubuntu Pathway based on the principles of Ubuntu, which emphasizes the interconnectedness and shared humanity of individuals.
Ubuntu Pathway aims to make a lasting impact by providing comprehensive support, education, and healthcare to children and families in disadvantaged communities.
