Brunei (Commonwealth Union)_ Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and other institutions of higher learning have been urged to establish guidelines that harness the synergies between artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence, thus capitalizing on the enhanced efficiency and productivity that this fusion can yield. These guidelines, intended to uphold transparency, integrity, and ethical deployment, are pivotal in averting the misuse of AI. Moreover, they serve to fortify the administrative structure and framework within the context of the nation’s digital transformation, steering Brunei towards its aspirations of becoming a smart nation. Further, the dynamic nature of constant evolution necessitates the agility and adaptability of such developments.

During a titah at the 35th UBD Convocation Ceremony, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the revered Chancellor of UBD, articulated this imperative. His Majesty expressed a confident belief in the preparedness of the graduates to confront the increasingly intricate global landscape marked by unforeseen rapid alterations. The advent of AI has introduced seismic transformations, particularly in education and legal domains, unprecedented in their magnitude. As the Sultanate’s oldest university, UBD boasts the capacity to spearhead the formulation of ideas that harness AI’s affirmative societal impacts.

His Majesty also emphasized that the professional realm remains equally susceptible to the relentless flux and unpredictability of change. In this context, the monarch commended UBD’s endeavor in establishing ‘CareerBN,’ a digital job-seeking platform enriched with machine learning and AI functionalities. His Majesty recognized the potential of this initiative in facilitating profile management, job matching, job notifications, streamlined interactions with prospective employers, and lot more. Furthermore, the monarch’s encouragement to graduates to explore entrepreneurial avenues underscores the potential of this sector to spur economic growth, foster novel enterprises, and create fresh employment prospects.

His Majesty also acknowledged UBD’s initiative in crafting an entrepreneurship blueprint to cultivate a comprehensive and well-organized entrepreneurial ecosystem for its students. This, he hoped, would foster an entrepreneurial mindset among the students and demonstrate the university’s instrumental role in co-shaping the trajectories of exceptional students, a vision resonating with UBD’s motto of ‘Futuring Together.’ Concluding his remarks, His Majesty reminded UBD to impress upon its graduates that their pursuits not only benefit themselves but also contribute to the betterment of the nation, faith, and homeland.
