Sunak claims lockdown policy didn’t consider economic downside

-

powers that did not take into consideration the implications of the lockdown further saying that even if we forget the economy, we should be able to agree that kids not being in school would have been a major nightmare. Across the commonwealth member nations took very different approaches where Australia took some of the most extreme measures and Pakistan resisted complete lockdowns over concerns of its impact on the economy but did impose a few light restrictions. As of today Australia with an estimated population between 25 to 27 million had over 9 million COVID-19 cases with approximately under 14 thousand deaths and in comparison Pakistan with an estimated population just over 220 million and had just 1.6 million cases and just over 30 thousand deaths, however in addition to lockdowns many other factors could have been at play such as genetic differences, obesity and other conditions that make you more vulnerable to severe disease and death from COVID-19 infections.

Sunak also stated that lessons have to be learnt from the indirect consequences of the lockdown, to which British authorities have set up an independent public inquiry. In recent months many experts have stated that the lock down has had little to no impact on severe illness and deaths from COVID-19 infections, however there are also those that insist they work. Time will tell us who is correct but it is clear as Sunak and many others have suggested that when considering lockdowns all factors need to be considered such as economic and psychological well being which also have a significant impact on health.
