Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam has finally addressed the much-speculated topic that has kept movie fans on edge, a possible reunion with superstar Rajinikanth. The iconic director-actor duo, who last worked together in the critically acclaimed Thalapathi (1991), may be on the verge of creating cinematic history again. During a recent conversation, Ratnam shared his thoughts on his current project Thug Life, one of the year’s most anticipated films. The movie marks the return of another legendary pairing, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, nearly four decades after their cult classic Nayakan.

Reflecting on his renewed collaboration with Haasan, Ratnam remarked, “It’s been similar working with Kamal Haasan then and now. He was fully evolved even then. He was a big star… I was just a beginner and he trusted me. Nayakan and Thug Life are in the same genre… a distant cousin, but different in terms of the equation.” While Thug Life continues to build excitement with its stellar cast, including Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sanya Malhotra, fans are equally thrilled at the hint of another reunion: Ratnam and Rajinikanth. Speaking on the subject, Ratnam said with a smile, “I think you should ask Rajini sir… you should see… we never know.”

Fueling the speculation is the buzz around a possible film tentatively titled Thalaivar173, which may go on floors in July 2025. Sources suggest that Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies will collaborate with a major Kollywood studio to produce the film. Thalapathi, their only collaboration to date, holds a revered place in Indian cinema. Not only did it showcase Rajinikanth in an uncharacteristically subdued and emotional role, but it also marked the debut of Arvind Swamy and was the last time Ratnam worked with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja.

Fans are closely monitoring official confirmations as they anticipate Thalaivar173. Should the project come to fruition, it would signify a momentous reunion between two titans of Tamil cinema, promising a cinematic spectacle of unparalleled grandeur. With Thug Life nearing release and whispers of a Rajinikanth-Ratnam collaboration gaining momentum, the legendary director appears poised to redefine Indian cinema once again.
