India (Commonwealth Union)_ Ramakkalmedu, one of the most peaceful hill stations in South India, is located in the beautiful Idukki district of Kerala. This small town is situated at an altitude of about 3,500 feet above sea level on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and is famous for its cool climate, wavy hills, misty mornings and breathtaking panoramic views. Often called the “City of Winds,” Ramakkalmedu is among the windiest locations in Asia. As visitors arrive, they are greeted by lines of tall wind turbines, now one of the most recognizable features of the landscape. Additionally, the name Ramakkalmedu is steeped in Indian mythology. It is said to translate as “Land of Rama’s Stone” and is associated with local stories linking the land to Lord Rama, a hero of the Ramayana. One of Ramakkalmedu’s biggest attractions is the towering twin statue of Kuravan and Kurathi, a tribal couple from local folklore. Sculpted by artist C.B. Jinan and unveiled in 2005, it is recognised as Kerala’s tallest twin statue. The monument is situated on a hilltop and is visible from the surrounding valleys and mountains and is a proud symbol of the tribal history of the region. Apart from the viewpoints, nature lovers will find plenty of trails to explore, with popular spots including Turtle Rock, Frog Rock, Rama Rock, Soolapara Hill and Hyderamala Hills, all with scenic walking trails and breathtaking views. Visitors can also take a short drive to several attractions close to the famous Idukki Dam, one of the largest arch dams in Asia.
Vehicles can take people close to the summit but many visitors prefer to walk the last stretch to enjoy the cool breeze and spectacular scenery. The top also has expansive panoramic views and the plains around Bodi and Cumbum are particularly visible, stretching into Tamil Nadu. The sunrise and sunset here are a stunning mosaic of colours and a memorable experience from this vantage point.
