Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ The Kenyan State Department for Diaspora Affairs has launched an innovative program to honor the exceptional contributions of Kenyans living abroad with the inaugural Jamhuri Diaspora Awards. The design of this annual event is to celebrate the diverse achievements of Kenyan citizens worldwide, recognizing their impact in fields ranging from business and technology to humanitarian efforts and the arts.

With fifteen thoughtfully curated categories, the awards are a unique opportunity to honor the diversity of talents and fields in which the Kenyan diaspora excels. Categories like Biashara for entrepreneurial innovation and Talanta for accomplishments in the arts showcase the creative and business acumen of Kenyan expatriates. Humanitarian service also takes center stage through awards such as Kujitolea, which honors outstanding voluntary efforts, and Utetezi, which highlights advocacy for human rights and social justice.

Multiple categories celebrate professional excellence, including Utafiti for contributions to scientific research and Uongozi for leadership achievements. The awards also spotlight cultural preservation with Utamaduni, environmental stewardship with Mazingira, and sports, education, and technology through categories that reflect Kenya’s values of innovation, resilience, and community service.

The nomination process is structured to be inclusive, making it easy for eligible Kenyans abroad to be recognized. Peers, colleagues, or community members can nominate any Kenyan citizen residing outside Kenya who has made significant contributions to their field through an official nomination form accessible on the State Department’s website or via a QR code. Nominations require a detailed citation highlighting the nominee’s accomplishments, and supporting documents like photos or videos are encouraged to reinforce the submission.

Nominees should submit their forms to Kenyan embassies in their host countries by November 20, 2024. The State Department has urged early submissions to facilitate a thorough review process. This initiative underscores Kenya’s dedication to engaging with its global citizenry, recognizing how these individuals contribute to Kenya’s international reputation while staying connected to their roots.

Through its active social media channels, the State Department has reinforced the dual goals of the Jamhuri Diaspora Awards: to honor individual excellence and to strengthen the ties that bind the diaspora community with their homeland. By celebrating these remarkable achievements, Kenya not only showcases the strength of its global citizens but also encourages continued engagement and connection among the diaspora.
