LONDON (CU)_Barbados, on Tuesday (30 Nov), became the latest republic in the world, as the country’s first president, Sandra Mason, was sworn in amid loud cheers and celebratory performances in the capital city of Bridgetown. Accordingly, the Caribbean island replaced the Queen as its Head of State severing ties to the British monarchy. Images of Prince Charles arriving in Barbados on Monday, and his attendance of ceremony marking the island’s historic transition were widely shared online, with certain reports speculating that the Prince and the Queen feel “sadness” and “regret” over the decision of the Barbadians.

Accordingly, on Tuesday, Her Royal Highness sent a message to people of Barbados, congratulating on the historic event of their country.

“On this significant occasion and your assumption of office as the first President of Barbados, I extend my congratulations to you and all Barbadians,” read her message. I first visited your beautiful country on the eve of independence in early 1966, and I am very pleased that my son [Prince Charles] is with you today. Since then, the people of Barbados have held a special place in my heart; it is a country rightfully proud of its vibrant culture, its sporting prowess, and its natural beauty, that attracts visitors from all over the world, including many people from the United Kingdom.”

Her Majesty went on to discuss relations between the Caribbean island and the British monarchy, adding that they would continue to maintain this partnership in the future.

“It is also a source of great satisfaction that Barbados remains an active participant within the Commonwealth, and I look forward to the continuation of the friendship between our two countries and peoples,” the Queen said. “As you celebrate this momentous day, I send you and all Barbadians my warmest good wishes for your happiness, peace, and prosperity in the future.”
