Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – British foreign aid has long been recognized as an essential component of the United Kingdom’s international relations. The commitment to providing foreign aid has undergone significant transformations over the years, reflecting changing priorities, global challenges, and a growing understanding of the interconnectedness of the world.  Aid can also play a crucial role particularly during a crisis such as a natural disaster that include earth quakes, cyclones, etc.

The UK last week announced a new humanitarian programme in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with a commitment of £21 million for 2023.

The new UK humanitarian programme, for 2023, will draw its attention on the extreme requirements in the eastern DRC

The programme is set to make available lifesaving assistance in emergencies, backing for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The aid will also provide relief for seriously malnourished children and provide assistance to those impacted by conflict to recover and rebuild their lives.

the programme is a continuation of the track record for the UK in making available life-saving humanitarian backing to highly vulnerable individuals in the DRC.

The DRC has been embroiled in a complex web of armed conflicts involving multiple armed groups, regional rivalries, and resource exploitation. These conflicts have led to the displacement of millions of people, creating one of the largest internally displaced populations globally. Civilians endure unimaginable atrocities, including violence, and forced recruitment. The continuous cycle of displacement exacerbates food insecurity, lack of access to basic services, and the breakdown of social structures.

“UK support will provide lifesaving assistance to those who have been displaced from their homes. It will support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. It will provide treatment for severely malnourished children. And it will help those affected by conflict recover and re-establish their livelihoods,” said Development Director Laura Mazal.
