India (Commonwealth Union)_ On Sunday evening, a double-decker boat capsized and sank near Tuvalthiram beach in Kerala’s Malappuram district, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people, including seven children. However, it is still unclear how many passengers were on board, but 40 passengers had tickets while others did not. The boat did not have a safety certificate either. The owner of the boat has been charged with culpable homicide, and rescue operations are currently underway, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Coast Guard involved in the search. Underwater cameras are being utilized to find the other passengers who are still missing.

The tweet from the Prime Minister’s office stated, “Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of ₹ 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased”.

Further, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed officials to conduct an emergency rescue operation and declared Monday a day of mourning for the lost victims, by postponing all government events. Police, fire, and health officials, along with local residents, are participating in the rescue operations. Additionally, the police reported that the cause of the accident has yet to be determined. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and regulations while operating watercraft. It is crucial for boat owners to obtain a safety certificate and ensure that all passengers have tickets. The loss of lives in such an avoidable tragedy is truly heartbreaking, and the thoughts and prayers of the nation are with the families of the victims during this difficult time.
