Travel with your pet in safety by vehicle, aircraft, ship, or train

(Commonwealth Union)_ Choose what is safest and most comfortable for your pet while planning vacation plans. For example, unless you’ll be able to spend a lot of time with your dog, they’ll be happier staying home rather than having it with you on your trip. Cats are usually always happier in their own environment. However, if you have decided to bring your pet, follow these guidelines for a stress-free trip.

Your dog will be most secure in a crate that has been secured to the vehicle with a seat belt or other securing measures. Dog restraints or seat belts are excellent for keeping your dog from wandering around the car and distracting the driver, but they haven’t been demonstrated to effectively protect dogs in a crash.

Most cats aren’t comfortable driving in cars, so put them in a carrier for their and your own protection. It’s critical to keep these carriers restrained in the car so they don’t bounce about and injure your cat. Secure a seat belt around the front of the carrier to accomplish this.

Keep your pet in the car’s rear seat. If an airbag deploys while your pet is in the passenger seat (even if in a crate), your pet could be injured.

Dogs and cats should always be kept inside the vehicle. Pets who are allowed to hang their heads out the windows of moving vehicles may be harmed by debris or become ill when cold air is blasted into their lungs. A pet should never be transported in the back of an open pickup truck.

Allow your pet to exercise and excrete frequently. However, never let your pet leave the car without a collar, ID tag, and leash. Share driving and pet care tasks with a friend or family member whenever possible. You’ll be able to buy food or use the restrooms at rest stops knowing that someone you know is keeping an eye on your pet.
