Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his warm wishes to the Hindu community on the occasion of Navratri, softening his tone and expressing commitment to building closer ties with India. Trudeau highlighted the significance of Navratri, a festival commemorating the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, and praised the celebration of feminine energy. He acknowledged Navratri as an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the rich history and culture of Hindu communities, recognizing their contributions to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. This gesture comes after recent tensions stemming from Trudeau’s claims of Indian involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The Hindu community in Canada had raised concerns about designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, endorsing Hamas and issuing threats against Indian consulates. The Hindu Forum of Canada implored the Canadian government to take immediate action against Pannun. Trudeau’s earlier claims of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing led to a diplomatic fallout, with India rejecting the allegations as absurd and motivated. The subsequent tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats and the suspension of visa services for Canadian citizens reflected the strained bilateral ties. India also issued an advisory for its citizens, urging them to exercise utmost caution due to growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes in Canada.

Despite the diplomatic tensions, Trudeau’s recent gesture of extending Navratri wishes to the Hindu community signals an attempt to rebuild and strengthen ties with India. However, the underlying issues, including concerns about the Canadian government’s permissive attitude towards terrorists and extremist elements, remain a source of friction. The diplomatic fallout has affected the functioning of the Indian embassy and consulate in Canada, leading to the temporary suspension of visa operations. The ongoing situation highlights the complex dynamics between the two countries, with India urging Canada to take prompt and effective legal action against anti-India elements operating from its soil.
