Ugandan king’s triumphant return!

-

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Charles Wesley Mumbere, the King of Rwenzururu in western Uganda, made a triumphant return to his region after treason charges were dropped against him. The king was accused of being responsible for violence that resulted in over a hundred deaths. The charges, including treason, murder, and terrorism, were dropped in June. The deadly clashes occurred in November 2016 between the Ugandan army and the king’s palace guards in Kasese. The army accused the sovereign of attempting to create an independent state with the help of his guard. The official toll put the number of people killed during the clashes at over 100.

After being in detention and under house arrest since the events of 2016, King Mumbere was joyously welcomed to the town of Kasese. A jubilant crowd greeted him as he waved from the sunroof of his car, followed by hundreds of people. While he had been provisionally released in February 2017, he was barred from returning to his kingdom until this recent development, marking a significant moment for both the monarch and the community.

The Kingdom of Rwenzururu, a traditional monarchy near the Rwenzori Mountains, straddles the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The kingdom turned into a separatist movement in 1962, with the Bakonzo ethnic group proclaiming their kingdom. The conflict persisted until 1982 when the Bakonzo laid down their arms in exchange for local autonomy. President Yoweri Museveni officially recognized the kingdom in 2009, but ethnic and political tensions have persisted, resulting in clashes between the local population and the police force since 2014. The ongoing strife reflects a complex and challenging situation marked by deep-seated divisions and discord within the community. Addressing these tensions and fostering reconciliation is crucial for achieving stability and harmony in the region.
