United Kingdom (Commonwealth Union)_Aer Lingus flights to Belfast City Airport from Newcastle, Birmingham and Leeds-Bradford were cancelled on Sunday night with flights unable to land due to weather conditions.

Planes were unable to land at UK airports due to heavy fog lingering over Northern Ireland on Sunday night.

The Mirror reported that several aeroplanes were circling above Belfast City airport in a bid to be granted permission to make a safe arrival.  While one flight was reportedly diverted to Dublin due to the weather conditions, Belfast International Airport is also believed to have been impacted.

It was previously reported by Edinburgh Live that an Aer Lingus Flight EI3622 from Belfast Airport to Glasgow was forced to divert to Edinburgh on Sunday after the runway was engulfed in fog.

Aer Lingus flights to Belfast City Airport from Newcastle, Leeds-Bradford and Birmingham were cancelled on Sunday night though the reasons are yet to be confirmed. Several departures from the same airport, named after George Best, were also cancelled.

Roads were closed across Northern Ireland, and elsewhere in the United Kingdom due to icy conditions. Road users have been reminded to slow down and leave bigger gaps between their vehicle and the vehicle in front.

Speaking on Sunday afternoon, the Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly said that the transition to lower temperatures will be noticeable over the weekend and that it will become rather cold next week with lower-than-average temperatures across much of the United Kingdom, accentuated by brisk easterly winds in the south.

He said that as the prevailing weather conditions will be characterised by high pressure, a good deal of settled weather is likely. Clearer skies and a marked reduction in precipitation are expected, though any showers that do occur are likely to be wintry in nature. A combination of overnight freezing temperatures, calm winds and saturated ground mean increasing risks of frost, fog and icy conditions.
