Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – With the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) countries across the world have expressed both optimism and caution with this new development.

Global participation is set to play a crucial role in ensuring the responsible development of AI technologies and the formulation of ethical guidelines governing their implementation for the betterment of society. This collective effort becomes especially significant in light of the upcoming global AI safety summit scheduled to take place in the UK later this year. As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and its current Presidency holder for July, the UK has taken the initiative to lead the first-ever high-level briefing session on Artificial Intelligence at the UNSC. The session, chaired by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, aims to deliberate on the potential impacts of AI on international peace and security while emphasizing the importance of promoting its safe and responsible application.

The briefing session in the Security Council Chamber in New York will feature notable speakers, including António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jack Clark, co-founder of the renowned AI company Anthropic, and Professor Zeng Yi, Director of the Brain-inspired Cognitive Intelligence Lab and co-Director of the China-UK Research Center for AI Ethics and Governance. This assembly of experts will engage in discussions that seek to enhance the understanding of AI’s implications and explore ways to uphold its ethical utilization across the global community. By fostering constructive dialogue and international cooperation, this pivotal gathering aims to pave the way for a future in which AI technologies are harnessed responsibly, ensuring a positive impact on society and international relations.

“The UK chairing the first ever briefing session on AI at the United Nations Security Council is an important milestone – of all the many issues discussed in the Council Chamber over the years, AI is among the most profound,” added Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Chloe Smith.
