Pakistan (Commonwealth Union)_ In a remarkable diplomatic achievement, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution proposed by Pakistan focused on the peaceful resolution of global problems. The resolution, titled “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes,” was passed on Tuesday, while Pakistan served as Security Council president for the month of July. The session was chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, who called the move a major step toward advancing international peace and stability.

The resolution, formally titled Resolution 2788 (2025), illustrates the importance of communication, early diplomatic engagement, and mediation in settling disagreements before they escalate into hostilities. It calls on UN member states to employ peaceful means such as negotiation, inquiry, and arbitration, as outlined in Chapter VI of the UN Charter. It also urges the United Nations and its member countries to increase regional and global collaboration. This involves collaborating closely with regional organizations to foster trust, avert disputes, and promote long-term peace through diplomacy and confidence-building measures.

On the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Deputy Prime Minister Dar met with Peter Launsky, Austria’s Special Envoy for Global Affairs. The two leaders talked about further collaboration between their countries, particularly in education, tourism, and business. Launsky lauded Austria’s Pakistani population for contributing to economic growth and social peace. Austria also acknowledged Pakistan’s active role at the UN and commended its leadership during its current Security Council presidency.

Pakistan, currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, said the resolution reflects its long-standing commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of international disputes. Pakistani officials described the adoption as a meaningful contribution to global peace and aligned with the country’s foreign policy goals. Additionally, Dar met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters a day before the resolution’s adoption. During the meeting, he raised concerns about India’s alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty. He cautioned that such moves might disrupt regional peace and called on the United Nations to play a more active role in embracing international agreements.

Dar also touched on other major subjects, including the Jammu and Kashmir issue and the constant threat of foreign-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. He highlighted Pakistan’s resolution to address problems through diplomacy and discussion, as mentioned in the UN Charter. Additionally, he noted recent Security Council deliberations on multilateral cooperation and UN coordination with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as evidence of Pakistan’s ongoing attempts to support world peace.

The resolution urges member states to take the necessary steps to ensure that UNSC decisions on peaceful dispute resolution are effectively implemented. The resolution urges all regional and subregional bodies to increase their efforts for peaceful conflict resolution, as well as to promote collaboration between these organizations and the United Nations. “ The resolution is an important contribution to the promotion of international peace and security through the use of preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention measures, and dispute resolution by peaceful means,” stated the Foreign Office (FO). The FO added that the passage of the Pakistan-sponsored resolution will be a vital tool in achieving regional and global peace and security goals.
