Uni Offers Round Update

-

As the anticipation builds among Year 12 graduates, the University Admissions Centre is set to release approximately 15,000 offers in its first January round on Thursday, marking a crucial milestone in the pursuit of coveted spots in 2024 tertiary courses across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

The lowest selection rank for entry into each course has been recently updated, setting the stage for the next round of offers on January 24. For those yet to submit their applications, there’s still time, as the deadline for first-semester study applications extends until midnight on Friday, February 2.

Kim Paino, Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer at the University Admissions Centre, encourages prospective students to explore courses with remaining vacancies for the upcoming offer round. She also emphasizes the importance of considering alternative pathways to reach their desired courses.

Understanding the University Offer Process

University offers are dispatched to applicants through state-based tertiary admission centers in a series of rounds spanning from December to March. Factors influencing offer decisions include the lowest selection rank, which comprises a student’s ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) plus adjustment factors, interviews, and special admission criteria.

While the majority of applicants receive their offers in the first January round, those who receive an alternative offer are advised to accept it, ensuring automatic consideration for their top preferences in subsequent offer rounds. Applicants have until January 17 to finalize their preferences for the next round of UAC offers.

Tracking Offer Numbers

Across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, and the ACT, over 100,000 Year 12 graduates have received offers, showcasing a strong interest in further studies despite the challenges posed by the cost of living. The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre reported a record-breaking 42,929 offers in its December round, indicating a significant increase compared to the same period in 2022. The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre also provided offers to nearly 11,000 Year 12 graduates.

Kim Paino notes a reduction in demand from individuals not transitioning directly from Year 12, attributed to concerns about rising living and study costs and a robust employment market.

Popular Courses and Preferences

Health and society and culture courses continue to be favorites among school leavers, making up almost half of first preferences to the UAC. Health courses secured the highest share at 25.7%, followed closely by society and culture courses at 20.6%.

The University of Technology Sydney’s Bachelor of Business and the University of Sydney’s Bachelor of Commerce emerged as top choices, with 956 and 742 first preferences, respectively. In Victoria, society and culture courses dominated preferences, accounting for 19.75% of VTAC offers in the December round.

Strategies for Unsuccessful Applicants

For those who didn’t secure their first preference in the initial January round, all is not lost. Applicants can still adjust their preferences to courses with vacancies and lower selection ranks in the upcoming rounds in February and March.

Teresa Tjia, CEO of VTAC, advises graduates to remain vigilant about change-of-preference deadlines and seek support from schools, tertiary institutions, and admission bodies to maximize their opportunities.

The Significance of the January Release

Kim Paino underscores the importance of the January release, emphasizing that for many students, this marks the round they’ve been eagerly awaiting. Notably, offers are being made for sought-after courses like medicine, and students have the first opportunity to modify their preferences after the initial release.

Among the offerings, a dual Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle takes the spotlight, highlighting the diversity of courses available to aspiring students in the competitive tertiary landscape.

As the tertiary admissions process unfolds, the journey for Year 12 graduates continues, with the hope that their academic aspirations align with the offers they receive in the coming rounds, shaping their path toward higher education and future career endeavors.
