In a major step towards transforming the game of shipping and logistics in South and Central Asia, the UAE‘s AD Ports Group has opened its first representative office in Islamabad, Pakistan. The step is a strategic one, indicating the company’s commitment to upgrade trade connectivity and infrastructure development in the region.
A Gateway to Regional Integration
Pakistan’s geographical location at the intersection of Central and South Asia offers unparalleled access to enormous markets and is a strong trade and logistics hub. In this regard, AD Ports Group seeks to leverage Islamabad as a gateway node in its overall vision for the evolution of an integrated China-to-Europe trade corridor. Opening the Islamabad office is a true reflection of the company’s strategy of long-term regional integration and economic cooperation.
Enhancing Bilateral Ties
The event was attended by the highest-ranking officials, including Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and the UAE Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Zaabi. The guest of honour is testimony to the fact that bilateral relations between Pakistan and the UAE are strengthening, with the countries solemnly announcing their mutual interest in developing economic cooperation.
Strategic investment in infrastructure
AD Ports Group’s foray into the Pakistani market started in 2022 with a historical 50-year concession to build and manage container terminal berths 6–10 at Karachi Port’s East Wharf in association with Kaheel Terminals. Another 50-year concession was then secured in 2023 to build and manage berths 11–17 for bulk and general cargo. These assets, valued at around USD 295 million, are the nucleus of the group’s vision to create Pakistan as a regional trade and logistics center.
Through its operating subsidiary, Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL), AD Ports Group has brought to Karachi Port sophisticated operation systems, international equipment standards, and best international practices. These technologies have transformed terminal productivity, improved vessel dwell time, and maximized cargo throughput, thus maximizing Karachi Port’s position as a top logistics hub in the region.
A Future Digital
With infrastructure on the ground, AD Ports Group is also making investments in digitalization to help spur Pakistan’s logistics sector revolution. AD Ports Group has entered into various world-class deals with a view to further solidifying its integrated logistics and digital value chain of commerce in Pakistan. The projects are anticipated to attract fresh avenues of foreign direct investment, increase regional connectivity, and establish Pakistan on the global map as a key regional trade hub.
Looking Forward
The opening of the Islamabad office is a milestone for AD Ports Group’s global strategy. It transforms the company into one of the prime drivers for Pakistan’s economic growth in line with the nation’s policy of trade facilitation, industrial diversification, and sustainable growth. As the group continues to step up its interaction with government representatives and strategic stakeholders, the Islamabad office will be leading the way in charting crucial infrastructure and trade interests in port, maritime, logistics, and manufacturing sectors.
Overall, AD Ports Group’s foray into Islamabad is a forward-thinking move and the natural course of regional development. Through its nexus of infrastructure development and digitalization and based on solid bilateral ties, the company is charting the way towards an integrated and sustainable Pakistan and wider region future.
