Urgent actions are called for by the members of the United Nations to save the planet.

Due to the burning of fossil fuels scientists say extreme weather conditions and sea levels have worsened.

A historic resolution was adopted on Wednesday March 29th, by the countries of the UN led by the island nation Vanuatu, calling for the UN’s highest courts to curb warning and protect communities from climate disasters.

Ishmael Kalsakau prime minister of Vanuatu arrived with the resolution and adopted, calling ” a win for climate justice of epic proportion”. Proceedings will begin as soon as the resolution goes to the international court of justice to clarify climate obligations.

UN secretary- General Antonio Guterres said that he hope the opinion would encourage nations to take the bolder and stronger climate options when it is issued. This condition is what the world so desperately need.

Vanuadu spearheaded the initiative, a country that has suffered back – to – back cyclones recently and is also at risk of rising seas engulfing swathes of the island. Scientists say the main course of both extreme weather and the worsening of sea levels and climate change is due to burning of fossil fuels. The resolutions specifically request the court to pay particular attention to the harm to small island nations.

Youth groups were also involved in the effort, and the clear need to protect the planet for current and future generations.

The director at the center for international law at the university of Singapore, Nilufer Oral , stated the UN international court of justice is the worlds highest court and can provide ” an advisory opinion on any legal questions” asked by states. However the opinion may not be binding, but it would encourage stated to go back and recognise at what they haven’t been doing and what they should be doing to address these emergency climate changes.

In 2015, as part of the Paris agreement, an agreement was reached to aim to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius ( 2.7 Fahrenheit). With an upper limit of 2 degrees Celsius ( 3.6 Fahrenheit) the agreement requested countries to submit their proposals to curb green house gasses to the united nations and regularly update those planes. As the environment that sustains us is disintegrating before our own eyes.
