Venezuelan President condemns attack on Christina Fernandez de Kirchner

-

Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, the Vice President of Argentina survived a suspected assassination attempt on Thursday, the 1st of September. President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro condemned this attack, expressing solidarity for the Vice President.

“We send our solidarity to Vice-President Cristina Kirchner in the face of the attempt on her life. We strongly repudiate this action that seeks to destabilise the peace of the brotherly Argentine people. The Great Homeland is with you, comrade!” Maduro said on Twitter, using the hashtags #FuerzaArgentina and #FuerzaCristina.

The tweet was supported by a video, which the Venezuelan leader had attached, in order to display the events of the day the attack took place. The video showed the 69-year-old Vice President exiting her car amidst a crowd whilst a gun is pointing towards her. A 35 year old man was retained by the police for aiming his hand gun at Ms Kirchner, and the police claimed to be in the process of ‘analysing’ the case.

Her building was surrounded by hundreds of prosecutors and protestors who have been demanding her imprisonment with a sentence of 12 years and a ban from public office, in case of alleged corruption during her 2007-2015 government.

Venezuelan leader Maduro, criticized this demand through sending a letter of solidarity to Ms Kirchner. He considers the accusations against the Argentine leader, who during her time in office maintained close relations with the late president Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), to be a “farce.”

Bolivia President Luis Arce also stood up in favour of the Argentine leader, taking to Twitter to mention – “We emphatically repudiate the attempt on the life of sister @CFKArgentina, vice president of #Argentina. From the Plurinational State of #Bolivia, we send all our support to her, her family, the government and the Argentine people. #TodosConCrsitina,” thus, showing solidarity for Kirchner.

Similarly, many world leaders supported the Argentine Vice President during this time, including the US Ambassador in Argentina who “was relieved to hear that the Vice President is well.”
