Warning against pesticides as cockroach infestations spread!

-

AFRICA ( Commonwealth Union) _ CropLife South Africa highlights that the country has had an almost pandemic epidemic of cockroaches due to the extremely wet and humid summer that just ended. The organization stated that the increase in cockroach infestation unfortunately triggered large-scale illegal use of pesticides that are not registered for indoor use with possible disastrous effects.

Avoid purchasing unlabeled pesticides in small containers from street sellers or social media ads as these items could seriously endanger individuals if used indoors.

The cockroach outbreak does not justify illegal activities that present a serious risk to the public’s health. In order to crack down on those who illegitimately sell very dangerous drugs on social media, CropLife SA says it is collaborating with the Directorate of Agriculture Inputs Control Inspectorate.

The inspectorate has successfully seized significant amounts of unregistered and highly hazardous items. The inspectorate has made serious interventions in unregistered pesticides. Cleaning frequently is the best way to safely combat the infestation. According to CropLife SA, cockroach management begins with a deliberate effort to sanitize human habitation.

Avoid keeping leftover food in your kitchen. Refuse bags need to be contained in plastic wheelie bins or drums where cockroaches can’t access them. Bathrooms, kitchens, and pantries should all have their floors properly cleaned and disinfected using a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite (household bleach).

Cockroaches can be found in and around electrical devices like refrigerators and washing machines, cabinets beneath sinks in the kitchen and bathroom, wall cavities where drainpipes are located, food cabinets, outdoor drains, and dark enclosed spaces like garages. Under electrical appliances and basins, where they thrive in the heat and humidity, cockroaches frequently establish breeding colonies.

Fumigation: Exit the building

Registered baits that are efficient and low risk to people and pets are available in ready-to-use bait stations. These ought to be put in areas like pantries or the nooks of kitchen countertops where cockroaches are most likely to forage at night. The placement of bait stations must be done with great care to keep youngsters and pets out of the way.

Consumers must follow safety recommendations, according to CropLife SA, when applying fumigants in the form of an aerosol canister or fumigation tablet, including donning a face mask and emptying the area of all occupants for the length of the fumigation. In accordance with the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies, and Stock Remedies Act, pest control providers must show proof of registration.

Customers are also recommended to inspect the pesticide that the pest control professional offers to apply, and to avoid using their services if the pesticide’s label does not specifically state that it should be applied for controlling indoor cockroaches. After fumigation, surface sprays containing pyrethroids can be used, particularly around drainpipe outlets, under electrical appliances, and around basins.

Use personal protective equipment, such as rubber gloves, a mask, long sleeves, and pants with long leggings, if you must. When people and pets are inside, avoid using any insecticides. When the treated surfaces have dried, they should only reenter.
