Global (Commonwealth Union) North Korea’s ambitious naval modernisation efforts have suffered a setback after the failed launch of a naval destroyer at the Chongjin Shipyard last Wednesday, an event attended by the country’s leader Kim Jong Un. The 5,000-ton warship, North Korea’s second-known destroyer and a key component of its expanding naval fleet, was damaged during a high-profile ceremony at the northeastern port. Satellite imagery later revealed the vessel tipped on its side, partially submerged and covered in blue tarps—signs of significant damage despite official denials.
According to the state media KCNA, the destroyer launch failure was caused by a malfunction in the ship’s launching system. The transport cradle reportedly detached too early, leaving the warship stranded and imbalanced.
Authorities in North Korea have responded with swift detentions. Authorities have taken the chief engineer, the head of the hull construction unit, and the deputy administrative manager at Chongjin shipyard into custody, and they have also called in the shipyard manager for questioning. Kim Jong Un, who was visibly frustrated over the incident, referred to it as a “serious accident” and “a criminal act caused by pure carelessness.”
The case marks a rare instance where Korean state media has openly acknowledged a military failure, underscoring the importance Kim Jong Un places on the country’s naval capabilities.
Just weeks earlier, North Korea launched its first destroyer—a 5,000-ton vessel named Chloe Hyon—at the western port of Nampo. Kim described the launch as a breakthrough in naval power, signalling his intent to develop “a Blue-water operational fleet” capable of projecting power beyond the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea claimed that the damage to the second destroyer was limited to scratches and minor water ingress, as the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies displayed satellite images that showed the vessel lying on its side, draped in blue tarps. Repairs are reportedly underway, with Kim ordering the restoration of the vessel ahead of a major political gathering in June.
According to South Korea’s military, North Korea also fired multiple test missiles into the East Sea hours after the incident. Kim Jong Un also warned several institutions, including the Department of Munitions Industry and ship design institutes, of accountability when the ruling party convenes next month.
