India (Commonwealth Union)_ In a momentous juncture that underscores his steadfast commitment to bolstering India’s global stature, President Joe Biden of the United States, during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit, resoundingly reiterated his unwavering support for India’s aspiration to attain a permanent membership status within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). As articulated in a communiqué disseminated by the White House, this pivotal affirmation was further underpinned by the United States’ warm embrace of India’s candidature for the non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the term 2028-29.

The carefully articulated words of the White House statement read, “Continuing to share the view that global governance must be more inclusive and representative, President Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UN Security Council with India as a permanent member, and, in this context, welcomed once again India’s candidature for the UNSC non-permanent seat in 2028-29.” The statement added, “The leaders once again underscored the need to strengthen and reform the multilateral system so it may better reflect contemporary realities and remain committed to a comprehensive UN reform agenda, including through expansion in permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of the UN Security Council”.

Notably, both Prime Minister Modi and President Biden, acknowledging the evolving dynamics of international relations, agreed on the importance of reinforcing and renovating the multilateral framework. Their collective vision underscored the necessity to augment the multilateral system to better reflect contemporary global realities, epitomizing an unwavering commitment to a comprehensive agenda for UN reform. This ambitious agenda encompasses not only the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership within the UN Security Council but also seeks to address pressing global challenges with renewed vigor.

The meeting between these two leaders transpired at the official residence of Prime Minister Modi, situated at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi, ahead of the commencement of the G20 Summit. The discussions held within the confines of this diplomatic setting encompassed an extensive range of subjects, all aimed at further deepening the robust bilateral ties between India and the United States. Reflecting on the outcome of this significant meeting, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his optimism regarding the pivotal role that the enduring friendship between India and the United States will continue to play in advancing global welfare.

Following the meeting, the PM took to X and tweeted, “Happy to have welcomed @POTUS @JoeBiden to 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Our meeting was very productive. We were able to discuss numerous topics which will further economic and people-to-people linkages between India and the USA. The friendship between our nations will continue to play a great role in furthering global good.” The 18th G20 Summit unfolded at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi this month, representing a pivotal gathering of world leaders. The culmination of this summit was marked by the adoption of a Leaders Declaration, encapsulating the shared vision and commitments of these leaders as they grapple with the complex challenges of our contemporary global landscape.
