According to experts, excessive blood sugar levels can have a significant impact on your eyes and may damage the retinal blood vessels if not addressed in the right time. Dr Girish Rao, Medical Director, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, spoke about the diabetic retinopathy. He said, “High blood sugar weakens the blood vessels in your eyes. That can make them leak or grow out of control in your retina, the light-sensitive area at the back of your eye. This is called diabetic retinopathy”.

Dr Rao further explained how the high blood sugar damages the nerves of the eyes. He said,  “Diabetic retinopathy happens when chronically high blood sugar levels damage the small blood vessels throughout your body, including your eyes. Once they’re damaged, blood vessels can start leaking blood and other fluids. A part of your eye called the retina can absorb some excess fluid. But when there’s too much fluid, you can experience swelling and thickening of the macula (DME), an area in the center of the retina that helps you see clearly and precisely”.

Getting diagnosed early, beginning medication, and adopting healthy lifestyle changes are the most effective ways to manage diabetes. Increased thirst, frequent urination, intense hunger, unexplained weight loss, weariness, impaired vision, irritability, delayed healing wounds, and recurrent skin infections are just a few of the common symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Your chance of acquiring this complication grows over time, and having continuously uncontrolled blood sugar levels enhances your susceptibility. The illness does not discriminate between people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Individuals with diabetes are often advised to consume foods high in fiber and protein since they have a low glycemic index. Blood sugar levels can be regulated by eating high-fiber meals such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Maintaining an active lifestyle and engaging in physical activity can also aid with sugar management.
