one year of work experience in Canada in a healthcare career or another necessary occupation that has been pre-approved. This will relatively support Indian students more than others, as they account for more than one third of all international students in Canada, with 220,000 last year.

Canada had decided to accept 341,000 immigrants in 2020 before the pandemic halted international travel. By prioritizing those already in Canada, the current PR policy seeks to make up for the deficit in immigration numbers in 2020. In addition, in 2021, a record 401,000 new immigrants will be admitted.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino emphasized the importance of Wednesday’s event. Referring to the pandemic, he said that new job opportunities are available and the country is seeking newcomers’ support in reviving the economy. He said, “The pandemic has shone a bright light on the contributions of newcomers in essential jobs, as we have recognized the caregivers, cooks and cashiers as our everyday heroes. With this new pathway, we are recognizing their key role in our economic recovery, allowing them to set down roots in Canada and help us build back better. Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting and we want you to stay.”
