LONDON — September 9, 2026: Britain’s traditional reputation for cool, changeable summers was put under extraordinary pressure in 2026 as a succession of heatwaves brought record-breaking temperatures, prolonged periods of extreme heat and repeated warnings of dangerous conditions across the country.
The summer’s most dramatic chapter began in June. On June 24, temperatures reached a provisional 36.1°C at Gosport in Hampshire, surpassing the previous UK June record of 35.6°C, recorded in both 1976 and 1957.
The heat intensified over the following days. On June 25, the temperature reached a provisional 36.7°C at Merryfield in Somerset, marking another new provisional June record. The following day, June 26, temperatures climbed even higher. A provisional reading of 37.3°C was recorded at Santon Downham in Suffolk before the Met Office’s verification process subsequently established an even higher figure.
The final verified figure was extraordinary: 38.0°C at Lingwood in Norfolk on June 26, making it the highest temperature ever officially recorded in the UK during June. The Met Office confirmed the figure in July after reviewing the original observation.
Another important event took place on 13 August when the temperature in Kew Gardens in London reached 38.1°C, or 100.6°C, which is among the hottest temperatures recorded over the summer.
As of 1 September 2026, the Met Office announced that summer 2026 (June to August) had been the warmest summer in the UK so far, with an average temperature of 16.5°C, almost making the occurrence of this average temperature impossible.
One of the most telling statistics is that the UK had 55 days of summer temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius in 2026, smashing the previous record of 41 days set in 1976 and 1995.
Meanwhile, France also faced its own extraordinary heat wave, reinforcing the idea that the exceptional summer in the UK is part of a larger trend in Europe.
Yet, in the instance of the UK, this suggests the understanding that high temperatures cease to be an unusual summertime oddity and turn into the new truth of the climate of the region.
