Will Virat Kohli miss 2024 T20 World Cup?

-

India (Commonwealth) _ The speculation that Virat Kohli would not play in the T20 World Cup 2024 has intensified after the World Cup 2023 concluded. Although there haven’t been any verified reports of the same as of yet, this has been a frequent subject of conversation. The course of action for the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies seemed to have been set by Captain Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, Ajit Agarkar, the head of the selection committee, and other board members.

Kohli might not be in the squad for the tournament, but Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit are anticipated to participate although losing the Australia and South Africa series. This is in line with a Dainik Jagran report. Despite his impressive T20I and IPL record, the board could just be looking at another middle-order alternative.

According to the Jagran report, an official from the BCCI informed the newspaper that Ishan Kishan may be selected in the middle order since they are seeking a batsman who can attack from the outset. The insider said that Kohli’s IPL 2024 performances would also be taken into consideration; however, he might not be able to play when he opens for his team, the RCB. The opening spaces, however, appear to be mostly empty.

The source further stated that before any decisions are taken, Kohli would be contacted regarding his future.

Virat Kohli has made the decision to take a sabbatical from white-ball cricket. He is probably not going to play in T20Is or ODIs until about March 2024, which is about four months away. For the five-match T20 series against Australia, Kohli was rested after the World Cup final upset. Notably, he would not be playing in the forthcoming Twenty20 International and One Day International matches against India and South Africa.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) been informed by Virat Kohli that he requires a vacation from white-ball cricket, albeit he hasn’t given a firm deadline. He gave the selectors and the BCCI his word that he will update them on his comeback to white-ball cricket at a later time.

The Indian cricket team has struggled with plenty for a long time. The task of selecting teams has grown more difficult for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as younger cricket players enter the league. However, there is still one position available: wicketkeeper. There is no estimated time frame for Rishabh Pant’s comeback; four keeper-batters are competing for the T20 World Cup in 2024. If Jitesh Sharma and Ishan Kishan are two strong contenders, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson may also contend for a position via the 2024 Indian Premier League.

These four players will need to perform at their highest level in the current series in order to be included in the World Cup team, though, as there won’t be many T20I opportunities prior to the tournament.

Jitesh Sharma, 30, hasn’t had much playing time for the Indian T20 teams. At the Asian Games, he made his debut against Nepal, however he only managed a meager 5. In domestic cricket, the batter has a strike rate of around 150. Yet, he has begun to establish himself in the few chances he has had in national colors. He is by no means guaranteed to play in the T20 World Cup in 2024. However, he may become a backup keeper rather than the first choice if he has a stellar IPL.

And in the fourth Twenty20 International against Australia at Raipur, he scored 35 runs off of 19 balls. Jitesh Sharma astonished everyone with his wide range of strokes. Sharma is anticipated to start in the fifth Twenty20 International. The selection process for the T20 World Cup in 2024 would undoubtedly become more difficult for selectors if he can deliver some solid knocks in the T20I series against South Africa in December. Virat Kohli will, however, be available for Test matches.
